The older I get the more convinced I am that I have more than one personality, so working on Janus was an interesting experience: a kind of Artwork-by-Committee.
Traditionally Janus is the Roman god notable for having two faces. He is the patron of doorways, janitors, and the month of January. Ironically none of this imagery made it into the image. Instead I used a lot of personal symbolism for the multitude of mixed feelings that I’ve been sorting through in the course of my life. It is like playing chess against yourself; no matter how brilliant your strategy your opponent is always on to you. But on the bright side, you never lose either.
Janus has two turtles.
