I didn't know I was working on Icarus. I thought I was working on C for Cherubim, but something felt a little funny about it. On an intuitive level, I started to realize that this angel had a very specific set of symbols associated with it: seagulls, sunlight, the sense of flight and motion, the colors blue and gold...
Icarus is simpler than the other angels, which is appropriate considering the subject matter: to me he is all about breaking free of the complexities and the traps and the mazes that we set for ourselves and leaping out into nothingness with only the sun and the wind and the water. Icarus is, to me, the effortless motion of seagulls.
There are two figures in this image- and you can ask "Which one is Icarus" but I'll have to admit that I don't know. Maybe the child. Maybe the man. Maybe both.
Icarus has one turtle. (Turtles are not big into leaps of faith)
